THE UMPHAKATHI DANCERS

Azumah was formed in 1985. The group has appeared in numerous films, have had dozens of TV appearances, and have recorded albums with various record companies over the years.
From 1989 to 1994 they were the major traditional music contribution in the African musical SIKULU, which ran in Johannesburg for 8 months, and subsequently had 2 seasons in Cape Town before setting off on an 18-nation worldwide tour, which lasted several years. During this tour Azumah had a long summer season in London and played several weeks in the USA.
Azumah include traditional melodies and dances in their program. In 1995 they had the honour to be chosen as the main traditional group to perform at Nelson Mandela’s 77th birthday celebrations at Gold Reef City. Azumah have recently completed 2 very successful tours in Japan. Just before their European tour, they performed for Jean Claude Van Damme’s wedding in the Seychelles.
