Brad Cunningham hails from Cape Town and has been performing in Johannesburg since early 2002. In this short time, he has managed to gather a significant amount of followers with his vibey guitar style and gutsy vocals. Catch him on a good night, and he blows a styling harmonica!
He has played regularly at venues on the reef like the infamous weekend “hot-spot” Tempos, O’Hagans in Douglasdale and Paulshof, The Upper Deck at Hartebeespoort dam, Sheila’s in Kyalami, La Toscana in Monte Casino, the Super Suite in Ellis Park, The Firkin in Centurion, The Elephant and Castle, Bar Blu (ex-Thatchers) in Edenvale and numerous other small pubs and restaurants around the Gauteng area.
In Cape Town he played at Quay Four at the popular V&A Waterfront, the Tavern and Ale, Pirates Grill, Newlands Rugby Grounds, The Keg & Grouse in Rondebosch, The River Club, The Troubadour, Doodles in Table View, The Tropical Restaurant in Paarl, the Ghekko Bar in Hermanus, Tidals in the Cape St Blaize Hotel in Mossel Bay; in George he was regularly seen at Fancourt Country Estate, the Hop Inn and the Carousel. In Knysna he frequented Tin Roof Blues and another popular venue called Zanzibar. He guest appeared at “Up The Creek” music festival in 2001.
Corporate and international functions include an end of year function for Sheer Water Adventures in Namibia, an event at the Elephant Hills 5 star Hotel at Victoria Falls, and a Christmas function for Zambezi River Rafters; in Bulawayo he was seen at the Cape to Cairo Restaurant and Harleys. The 5 star El Gizirah Sheraton Hotel in Egypt contracted Brad for 3 months in 2001.
Brad is currently recording his debut album and the demo’s we have heard so far from this young man are sure to make this new release an instant success. His songs all have strong lyrical content and as an added bonus, the popular Nia Nel supports Brad with backing vocals on one of his tracks. Brad takes his influences from many music genres and has written material ranging from reggae, to blues, to rock, country and soul, always adding a special “Brad” touch which I am sure people will get to recognise pretty soon.
Brad’s repertoire covers songs that can take you through a background set, and then lead the evening on to a vibey and energetic finish (if you can get the crowds off the dance floor…). He has a stunning rapport with any audience, from top management to the general public, and with his keen sense of humour, has definitely won the hearts of all the “Vaalies”! He has done guest spots with bands like Over the Top, Southern Comfort, Watershed, and 3 support appearances with SA’s favourite comedian, Barry Hilton.
FRESH
AND FUNKY, CATCH HIM WHILE YOU CAN…
