WHO’S NEWS have been around since 1984 and have been a force on the South African pub, club and function circuit. They have been seen in many different line-ups, finally settling with founder member Craig James on percussion and lead vocals, and Dion Olwagen on guitar and vocals.
DION OLWAGON has been in the music industry for 14 years. He started off in a show band that backed some of the country’s top Afrikaans and Country music artists. He also played with top saxophonist Mike Faure’s groups SOUL PURPOSE and BRASS TACKS. He joined WHO’S NEWS in 1994. He now plays a very important role in the showmanship and the highly professional musicianship of the band.
CRAIG JAMES has been on the music scene for 23 years and has played in some of the country’s top bands such as SOUL PURPOSE, BRASS TACKS, RIO, SCOTTFREE, RAZOR and RIKSJA. He is one of the country’s top session singers. He is responsible for singing many radio jingles and has performed on over 100 CD’s on either backing or lead vocals. He has also had chart success with two of his original compositions off the MY ANNIVERSARY album, namely ROCK & ROLL HERO (number 6 on 5FM) and ONE LIFE TO LIVE (number 1 on Radio Jacaranda) and also ALWAYS (number 1 on Radio Jacaranda and number 3 on 5FM). He performed with rock opera Helen of Troy and scored yet another number 1 with THE LOVE I HAD on Highveld Stereo. Two months later he was riding the charts again with the song RAIN which went to number 4 on Highveld Stero.
In 1997, CRAIG opened his own recording studio IN-HOUSE RECORDINGS and launched 2 record labels IN THRU OUT MUSIC for the English music market, and LANGARM PLATE for the Afrikaans sector. Dion works closely with Craig in the studio and together they have produced in excess of 20 party CD’s to date. They have sold over 100,000 copies of their products to the public.
WHO’S NEWS go from a 2 piece band right up to a 7 piece band, depending on budget. They play music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, up to the present hits.
